V Centenary. In 2019 began the celebration of the V Centenary of the first expedition around the world of Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano, an essential event in the history of international navigation and the milestone that confirmed that the Earth is navigable in all its roundness. But, even more, it was a voyage that meant a great expansion of the Spanish language and inaugurated the processes of globalization that would follow. The first circumnavigation of the globe, which forever expanded the known world, its cultures, its interconnectivity and its biodiversity.
This voyage, which began in 1519 and ended in 1522, and in which five ships and two hundred and sixty-five sailors, of ten different nationalities, took part, is taken up by the Government to coordinate the different activities and initiatives to commemorate this event. In view of them, the National Commission for the Commemoration of the V Centenary was created for the preparation and programming of the commemorative events to celebrate and remember this impressive feat. This Commission joins the initiatives that are being carried out both by civil society and by Spanish public institutions and by other States.
